For 25 years, the name Rachel Ashwell has been synonymous with SHABBY CHIC®. The SHABBY CHIC® brand, based on the aesthetics of beauty, comfort, and function, marries great design with casual ease. British-born Rachel Ashwell is a self-made business woman who founded the iconic brand known as SHABBY CHIC® in 1989 when, as a single mother of two young children, she looked to open a small shop where she could sell pretty things without spending much time or distance away from her children.
Rachel opened the first store on trendy Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, California with a line of slip-covered furniture, bedding, and fabrics. Today, Rachel Ashwell SHABBY CHIC® Couture flagship stores are located in Santa Monica, San Francisco, New York City’s Soho, Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. In addition, the Simply Shabby Chic® line of home furnishings and décor, created in 2004 by Ms. Ashwell in an exclusive partnership with Target® stores, continues to bring Ashwell’s blend of English elegance and California casual to consumers nationwide. In 2011, Rachel Ashwell purchased a fully operational bed and breakfast in Round Top, Texas. The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell fulfilled a life-long dream of Rachel’s to own and decorate a hotel.
The Prairie is a full service B&B, as well as a location to rent for weddings, events, and photo shoots.
Rachel personally furnished the property with her vision, “Marie Antoinette goes to Texas.” All furnishings are from her stores and the local flea markets. This is Rachel’s first venture into hospitality. “Decorating has been a life-long dream of mine. My lifestyle places me in hotels of all kinds around the world. The formula I’m always looking for is hard to find—luxury and comfort, while still experiencing the local culture.”
The Prairie is located in the tiny town of Round Top (population 91), 75 miles from Austin and 85 miles from Houston. Each March and September, the town swells to over 30,000 as antique sellers and seekers from all over the world converge in circus tents, fields, and warehouses to buy and sell antiques.
Her vision and love of vintage style and flea-market finds have struck a chord with her customers who have found her comfortable, relaxed approach to design both reassuring and achievable. She has educated and inspired people through a series of books, as well as a TV series, called Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic on Style Network. Rachel has also published seven books on inspiration and design.
